Benefits of pure silk
As a natural protein-based fiber, silk is hypoallergenic and tends to be gentle on the skin. It’s less likely to cause allergic reactions and is suitable for those with allergies or skin sensitivities. Silk is renowned for its incredibly smooth texture. It feels gentle and soft against the skin, providing a luxurious sensation and minimizing any potential irritation, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin.
Silk has excellent moisture-wicking properties, absorbing perspiration while still maintaining its own natural moisture balance. This feature helps keep you dry and comfortable, making it an excellent choice for nightwear.
A brief history of silk
Silk, a luxurious and highly coveted fabric, has a rich and ancient history that dates back over 5,000 years. The story of silk begins in ancient China.
Legend has it that the discovery of silk dates back to around 2700 BC when the Chinese Empress Leizu observed silkworms spinning shiny and delicate cocoons. According to folklore, she accidentally dropped a cocoon into her tea, and as she tried to retrieve it, the cocoon began to unwind, revealing a long and lustrous thread. Fascinated by this discovery, she began to unravel the secrets of silk production.
Silk fabric quickly became highly sought after due to its softness, sheen, and lightweight texture. It became a symbol of status, luxury, and elegance not only in China but across the ancient world.
The legendary Silk Road, a network of trade routes that connected China to the Mediterranean, was established primarily for the exchange of this valuable commodity, among others.
Where does your silk come from?
The pure silk fabric used at Baturina Homewear is made in Germany by Plauener Seidenweberei, a textile factory in Saxony that has a long history dating back to 1928. They supply us with the highest quality ethically made silk fabrics.
How to clean silk?
Please wash the silk items separately, if possible inside out, on a delicate wash cycle without additional loads, at 30 degrees with a suitable silk detergent. Avoid tumble drying. When drying outdoors, silk items should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Silk items can be ironed slightly damp at a maximum of 110 degrees.
- Never wash silk with bleach
- Do not sprinkle the silk with water when ironing
- Do not remove individual stains with water, wash the whole item instead
- Always iron silk from the reverse side
- Never wring out silk
Why is silk more expensive than other fabrics?
Silk production involves a labor-intensive process. It begins with the careful nurturing of silkworms, feeding them a specific diet and ensuring their health to produce high-quality silk. It can take thousands of silkworms and numerous cocoons to create a small amount of silk. This and the expertise and craftsmanship required in producing high-quality silk contributes to its cost.
How is faux silk different from real silk?
Faux silk, or artificial silk, refers to synthetic fabrics or materials that imitate the appearance and sometimes the texture of real silk. These can include materials like polyester, nylon, rayon, or other synthetic fibers. Faux silk is manufactured and does not come from natural sources like silkworms. While it might resemble real silk in appearance, it does not have the qualities of genuine silk. However, faux silk can be more affordable and easier to care for compared to real silk.
How much momme does your silk have?
Our silk supplier does not use the momme measurements, instead the quality of the silk is measured in grams per square meter (gsm). Our satin silks come at 107 gsm which would convert to approximately 29 momme.
