A dressing gown is traditionally worn indoors, in the comfort of the home. It’s fashioned in cotton, silk, linen and wool – unlike a bathrobe, it’s not made from water absorbing fabrics.

What is the purpose of a dressing gown?

A dressing gown, also known as a robe, offers practicality, comfort, and convenience for various home activities, making it a popular and timeless loungewear choice around the world. It’s a comfortable, loose-fitting garment that is worn at home, particularly during morning or evening routines. A robe is synonymous with refinement and sophistication and is often personalized with initials embroidery.

Is a dressing gown and bathrobe the same thing?

A dressing gown is typically a loose-fitting garment worn over clothes or nightwear for lounging around the house. It is often made from materials such as cotton or silk and may have a sash or belt to cinch it at the waist. A bathrobe, on the other hand, is designed to be worn after bathing or showering to absorb moisture from the body.

Tradition and history

The dressing gown as we know it today originated from the banyan robe – a loose T-shaped gown, imported from Persia to Europe in the 18th century. Over time the original cut was adapted into a coat-like shape with collar and belt. The modern-day dressing gown combines the loose fit with a shawl collar and waist-tie. With the absence of central heating in the 19th century, the fashionable gentleman would wear his dressing gown to stay warm, in the study room and to welcome guests.
